Central nervous system microstimulation: Towards selective micro-neuromodulation

چکیده
Electrical stimulation technologies capable of modulating neural activity are well established for neuroscientific research and neurotherapeutics. Recent micro-neuromodulation experimental results continue to explain neural processing complexity and suggest the potential for assistive technologies capable of restoring or repairing of basic function. Nonetheless, performance is dependent upon the specificity of the stimulation. Increasingly specific stimulation is hypothesized to be achieved by progressively smaller interfaces. Miniaturization is a current focus of neural implants due to improvements in mitigation of the body’s foreign body response. It is likely that these exciting technologies will offer the promise to provide large-scale micro-neuromodulation in the future. Here, we highlight recent successes of assistive technologies through bidirectional neuroprostheses currently being used to repair or restore basic brain functionality. Furthermore, we introduce recent neuromodulation technologies that might improve the effectiveness of these neuroprosthetic interfaces by increasing their chronic stability and microstimulation specificity. We suggest a vision where the natural progression of innovative technologies and scientific knowledge enables the ability to selectively micro-neuromodulate every neuron in

متن کاملModel-Based Design of Stimulus Trains to Increase Selectivity in CNS Microstimulation
The goal of this project was to design stimulus trains that would enhance selectivity between microstimulation of cells and axons in the central nervous system (CNS). Detailed computer-based models of CNS cells and axons were developed that accurately reproduced the dynamic firing properties of mammalian neurons. The results demonstrate that alterations in the stimulus frequency, based on diffe...
متن کاملImplication of Neuromodulation Therapy by Electroacupuncture in Treatment of Diabetes
Diabetes affects approximately 366 million individuals worldwide. Current pharmacological therapy is not perfect, and often is associated with adverse side effects. Acupuncture is used as an adjunctive treatment for a number of cardiovascular diseases. Chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system has emerged as a key player in both the pathogenesis and progression of diabetes and metabo...
متن کاملDeep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus for peripherally induced parkinsonism.
RESULTS Trauma to the peripheral nervous system can cause various movement disorders including dystonia, tremor and parkinsonism. Most patients with peripherally-induced parkinsonism develop symptoms that extend beyond the original site of injury, suggesting involvement of the central nervous system, possibly through reorganization in response to altered peripheral input. Most patients with per...

Neural sensing and stimulation have been the backbone of neuroscience research, brain-machine interfaces and clinical neuromodulation therapies for decades. To-date, most of the neural stimulation systems have relied on sharp metal microelectrodes with poor electrochemical properties that induce extensive damage to the tissue and significantly degrade the long-term stability of implantable syst...
